Here's one of my finishes from early in the year. This is the biggest quilt I've ever made. I loved every minute of it! I was asked to make a quilt for a good friend for his wife (also a good friend) for Christmas. A lot of things happened (including my sewing machine breaking and getting into a pretty bad car accident) so it was a bit late, but it was well received so I'm glad I was able to take the time to get it done how I wanted it to be instead of rushing to finish.<br />
<br />
I was asked to do a quilt with burgundy, hunter green, and cream (those are their bedroom colors) and they wanted queen size to fit the bed. Woo! Shoving a queen sized quilt through my little domestic machine to quilt was a real treat!! I was sent a picture of what he liked for style and it happened to be the Ohio Star block. One of my favorites! I got working on math and figured it out and this is the result:<br />

I used hunter green broadcloth for the backing - it was so nice to be able to piece the back so quickly with the 108" broadcloth. I will definitely be going for that for future quilts!</div>

I should work on that.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I participated in an Easter swap that was hosted by the same person as the Bitches Get Stitches one. You could pick salty or sweet, or middle. I picked middle because while I don't mind how I talk, I don't usually flaunt my poor language about.<br />
<br />
I ended up having Brandi as my swap mama (weird) and then getting Heidi from my birthday club as my partner! So cool!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibwqV6-YAcayVfJm8IByp_zwEhvXfJoEt2s2K03teLAXwPomW86q3tfQkNzxFGbgqn__PO63C-xtWA32Fx_WVEyu4AiCK8r159I0Z9OXchb26a0yyMi94eY1wCRZMWMccUS9rBmBZCgGw/s1600/IMG_0010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibwqV6-YAcayVfJm8IByp_zwEhvXfJoEt2s2K03teLAXwPomW86q3tfQkNzxFGbgqn__PO63C-xtWA32Fx_WVEyu4AiCK8r159I0Z9OXchb26a0yyMi94eY1wCRZMWMccUS9rBmBZCgGw/s1600/IMG_0010.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I know Heidi likes flying geese so my project centered around those. In the swap you were supposed to make the medium sized open wide zip pouch (tutorial by <a href="https://www.noodle-head.com/2012/06/open-wide-zippered-pouch-diy-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Noodlehead</a>) but I made her one much bigger. I wanted her to be able to use it for her knitting projects. I used Cotton + Steel for the geese, a cute Hello text print from my stash, and some green/white solids to balance out that crazy. The inside was a slight nod to her love of Miller Lite. It's really a St. Patrick's Day print, but I figured since it had beers on it and Easter was just after St. P's day, it was ok.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQz5SS_EdRDA-3k4fCLRblUussRunbWSGN_wz0RO1jt8svxBY7_ePmRFkOYmI2TrQeLF9zzNc86hyphenhyphen15bh8m7UIuawjMNZzF9uuCh9Noz1Nve6bphq3n48XCoqmqTz-Hmof5EkWja9RUbI/s1600/IMG_0009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQz5SS_EdRDA-3k4fCLRblUussRunbWSGN_wz0RO1jt8svxBY7_ePmRFkOYmI2TrQeLF9zzNc86hyphenhyphen15bh8m7UIuawjMNZzF9uuCh9Noz1Nve6bphq3n48XCoqmqTz-Hmof5EkWja9RUbI/s1600/IMG_0009.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I stuffed it full of yarn, more metal zippers, and candy (mostly from Mexico and my stopover in California).<br />
<br />
My tradition the last couple years has been to make myself a new Easter skirt. Eventually I will get into dresses, but I have a hard time with dresses because of my body shape - nothing really looks flattering on me. Skirts and shirts look so much better. This year, I used a vintage sheet from my stash (and some white to make it less see-through), as well as the sparkly knit I had leftover from my sad attempt at a <a href="http://seekatesew.bigcartel.com/product/women-s-penelope-knit-peplum-top-pdf-pattern" target="_blank">Penelope Peplum</a> (turns out, this kind of shirt looks crummy on me - but I do have plans to hack the pattern and make it into a plain shirt because the measurements for the arms/chest are perfect).<br />
<br />
I used the <a href="http://imaginegnats.com/the-cerisy-skirt-tutorial/" target="_blank">Cerisy Skirt Tutorial</a> from Imagine Gnats for my skirt again this year. I love this pattern - it's so quick and perfect!<br />

It's called Harps & Thistles and is in Cuyahoga Falls and it's much closer than My Sister's Yarn Shop in Green, but I love them both, equally. They have different selections of yarn and a wide variety of classes. Since Harps & Thistles is super close, I spend quite a bit of time (and money) there. Brandi and I have taken a team knitting class (even though we still haven't finished the project) and the owner hosted a knit along group time for the Downton Abbey mystery knit along! So much fun!<br />

I've made friends with a few of the ladies who frequent the shop (including the lady who teaches a lot of classes including the team knitting one) and they invited me along to the Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet Festival! I've never been to a fiber fest and it was AMAZING. I loved it! The opportunity to see so many shops and fiber makers in one spot was just incredible! I want to go to all the festivals now! Anyway, I saw a bunch of awesome yarns, bought a few, and a book. We also got to see Cindy from Harps & Thistles because she was there with Three Irish Girls Yarn!<br />

I've been working a lot lately, especially on things at home. Knitting and cross stitch have been my main time consumers, but I have a lot of sewing that needs to get done. I thought I would update you all on what's been happening around here in an effort to be better about blogging my progress.<br />
<br />
I've entered a lot of swaps this year, the Instagram ones have dragged me in with their siren calls. I've also had the great joy of being a part of an OHCraft birthday club! This means I have a lot to balance on my plate, but I seem to be keeping up, if not a little ahead on those things so I can catch up on my backlog of things I owe people.<br />
<br />
First up: my birthday was in February, right before I left for Mexico (I'll update that in another post, I promise!) so I got most of my birthday club gifts after I got back. It made for a really nice homecoming!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kVjy1ouITBE/VSaHRFSmVcI/AAAAAAAAE7U/VBwnSPq8sYY/s1600/PicMonkey%2BCollage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kVjy1ouITBE/VSaHRFSmVcI/AAAAAAAAE7U/VBwnSPq8sYY/s1600/PicMonkey%2BCollage.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
Clockwise from top left:<br />
1. Those photos from Chrissy are already hanging in my bedroom and look amazing!!<br />
2. I use the pin cushion jar from Missy every time I sew.<br />
3. The tea, fabric, and sooooo cute swimmy envelopes from Carrie are right up my alley - I have been drinking that tea almost every evening and it's delish!! I think I'll use the echino London print in my England quilt that I'm planning (so much England fabric in my stash! I love it!!).<br />
4. The present from Heidi has mostly been used already, too. I use that Browns duct tape all the time, the chapstick is already in my purse, and the Game of Thrones guys went on the trip to Mexico with me. She also made me that lovely hoop that looks so much like Aneela Hooey's Little Red Riding Hood and I LOVE it!! When I was little I went to school as Little Red Riding Hood for my birthday and passed out treats to my classmates. That hoop is hanging in my bedroom on my newly constructed collage wall. She also made me a knitting bag that goes over your arm - I LOVE it! So functional and perfect for knitting socks on the go!<br />
<br />
Here's a better look at Tiny Tyrion and Tiny Jon Snow:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipf5mb2OtSPWlZ-1RpOZxqQvzcHBn7IzxhED_ttiZrUgmnalbTTltUBGSgCFxAVMeCTpzH30YmSnCXxMJjBjEVeyiTphgOuuNwV4UZg8X7fN0_qxSIlmmwQt9nGomTiU139LtNZZ4_9E0/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipf5mb2OtSPWlZ-1RpOZxqQvzcHBn7IzxhED_ttiZrUgmnalbTTltUBGSgCFxAVMeCTpzH30YmSnCXxMJjBjEVeyiTphgOuuNwV4UZg8X7fN0_qxSIlmmwQt9nGomTiU139LtNZZ4_9E0/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage2.jpg" height="320" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Then, Amanda sent me this package:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

You guys, this is me, in a box. It's amazing! She made me a Union Jack pillow with England fabric and sent me the bits leftover so I could add that to my stash! Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, London print, a book, candy, snacks for Neo (!!), soap...so much awesome.<br />
<br />
This birthday club is the best idea ever!! I'm so glad I joined it - I got such great gifts and I'm so happy to have gotten to know these 5 ladies better!!<br />
<br />
I'll end this post with the other gift I received when I got back and that's the swap I did at the beginning of the year. It was called "Bitches Get Stitches" and it was supposed to be a little vulgar. If you know me, you know that I've not got the cleanest vocabulary. I swear quite a bit. But I do mind myself around the public and generally keep my vulgarity for those close to me. Nevertheless, this mini quilt I received is AMAZING. It's so perfect. It's hanging in my bedroom right inside the door and I love looking at it every day!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JHUJ4tkkCoQ/VSZ9DkCXwbI/AAAAAAAAE4k/b6QAlwbqnUM/s1600/IMG_9824.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JHUJ4tkkCoQ/VSZ9DkCXwbI/AAAAAAAAE4k/b6QAlwbqnUM/s1600/IMG_9824.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The doll is a "Dammit Doll" and you're supposed to whack it on something and shout "dammit dammit dammit" until you feel better. It really works!! The giant gummy bear was eaten in about five minutes, and that bakers twine is just waiting for the perfect parcel to be wrapped up in it.<br />
<br />
I've had such great luck with all the things I've gotten this year - I'm so grateful to have this community of makers who supports and encourages you. I had a tough couple months here and I'm so glad to know that there are others out there who are just as weird as I am. :)<br />
<br />
Next update will be some knitting progress, then Easter/Easter Swap, and then I'll get to Mexico 2015. Until then, I leave you with sleepy Neo:<br />

So many things happened and I just never got on here to talk about them. So, here goes...<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">View of Cumbres neighborhood of Tijuana from our second worksite.</td></tr>

Mexico in February was amazing. We worked on three sites during the week and got to see so many amazing things. The hibiscus above is what was growing next to the house where we made blocks. The first site we worked on was laying the floor and walls, here we made blocks, and the third site we worked on was digging the trenches for the foundation. All three had wonderful people to meet and work alongside. It was absolutely amazing!<br />

We went to the Pelican (the grocery store [which is more like Wal-Mart, but it's not Wal-Mart because they have that too] but it is actually called the Comercial Mexicana by name, but we call it the pelican because their symbol is a pelican...) and picked up some baby items because the daughter of the first home we worked on was pregnant! We had such a great time. And, as it turns out, her daughter's birthday is the same day as mine so we got to celebrate together. :)<br />

As always, we stopped in to see Christina and Juan. Our group worked on two houses for their family - one for Christina and Juan and one for Christina's children. I wasn't there to work on either house, but I have grown to adore Christina, Juan, and the kids in the subsequent years.<br />

We also took a trip through La Gloria (the town where the posada [the place where we stay] is) and stopped at the panaderia to get some treats on the way home. We also stopped at the swap meet with its strange dinosaurs, etc.<br />

And we got to see the TJ soccer team play. They're called the <a href="http://www.xolos.com.mx/en" target="_blank">Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente</a>. Super long name...they're nicknamed the Xolos (pronounced sholos). The <a href="http://www.akc.org/breeds/xoloitzcuintli/index.cfm" target="_blank">xoloitzcuintli</a> is a dog that is hairless and a native of Mexico. We had such an awesome time at the game! I'm hoping maybe we can rope our way into another one this year.<br />

<br />
I've started this post about 1.3 million times. Every time I start it, I just can't. So I don't. I'm going to be stronger this year, so here it goes.<br />
<br />
Last year when I was in Mexico (which may be part of the reason for the lack of posting those pictures and stories), I was able to keep in contact with my parents and pup by FaceTime since we all got iPhones. It was great. I was so happy to see his face. Especially since he wasn't doing well without me. Before I left, I took him to the vet to see if he was ok because he was acting funny. Vet said some titers were a little high but still normal and everything else was ok. I left for Mexico thinking my baby boy was just fine. But he wasn't.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKc4jtt-urRD7YTB4cLNHRcuE9q4wxV6HvifCs51_yM2mUBmHtorBeLcEv3LnZPOql5KcH43WoR9mMzvSrRZISqwV0Owb2nXCqbLRpB6tsN8Xs89EZ-FCL9GYfL9NdyIGuprVSUbqU9Kw/s1600/noses.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKc4jtt-urRD7YTB4cLNHRcuE9q4wxV6HvifCs51_yM2mUBmHtorBeLcEv3LnZPOql5KcH43WoR9mMzvSrRZISqwV0Owb2nXCqbLRpB6tsN8Xs89EZ-FCL9GYfL9NdyIGuprVSUbqU9Kw/s1600/noses.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
While I was gone, my parents took him back twice. They thought he wasn't eating because I was gone, but he was used to their house so that made no sense. Then maybe something was wrong with his stomach. Maybe he was in pain. Still no answers.<br />
<br />
When I got back, I took him in again. They re-did the blood test and it turned out that he had advanced kidney disease and it was rapidly shutting down his kidneys. He had about 20% effectiveness by then and I was heartbroken. Absolutely smashed. This boy that I didn't even want, but turns out I needed, this boy who helped heal my mom, me, my dad, and everyone he met, was sick. I just couldn't.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-egJqMHmoMqY/Ut7m0q04pjI/AAAAAAAAEZE/ZFPrzyVocpY/s1600/rrh+wolf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-egJqMHmoMqY/Ut7m0q04pjI/AAAAAAAAEZE/ZFPrzyVocpY/s1600/rrh+wolf.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
We decided to do treatment for a time and see how he responded to it. He did, but not as well as we would have liked. So on March 9, 2013, I took my best friend in for the hardest choice I ever made. He went peacefully and surrounded by we who loved him.<br />
<br />
I think I cried for three straight weeks. I couldn't sleep, because he was always there to keep me warm and safe. I stopped walking, so I gained weight. I was just unhappy. I never realized how lonely I felt until there wasn't a happy face to greet me when I got home. My cats are awesome, but they're not snuggly (Tigger was - boy, do I miss that cat!) and they don't really care when I'm home, just so long as I feed them.<br />
<br />
This went for about a month and I just couldn't take it. I looked and looked to see who I could see on the Paws and Prayers website and I found my new little man. Eons ago I had watched The Matrix (and loved it!) and decided that I wanted a dog named Neo someday. Just so happens that they had a litter they named after Matrix characters. And one was named Neo. Kismet? I think so.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Neo is a St. Bernard/Red Tick (English) Coonhound mix. He's big, awkward, crazy, and the love of my life. I never set out to replace Raj, but to replace that hole he left in my life. Neo is very little like Raj, except he loves. All. The. Time. He is happy and waggy. He is sweet and crazy. He is my boy and I love him. I'm back to walks almost daily (we've even started running again!) and I sleep. Oh, how I sleep.<br />

I'm terribly sorry. I haven't even posted my pictures from last year's trip to Mexico!!<br />
<br />
Anyway, I'll start on the back log of what I've been working on this past year and promise to be better about blogging. :)<br />
<br />
Last year I had two friends have babies. I had never made a quilt before, but it was on my 2013 resolution list to make one top to bottom. So, I made two.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwzb4y_cWaXdPRzWrvPE-5aJyWqyGGWEn7ty59N6nfEadaThEWsNHSBy05SWkgXmq2R-XRKs7ZzhDq13xuOElcUUNBGAsA2BWGrqS4bI4ONmiG5aFvpcP2fuH1wQl9NdM46tJ7R9KWY5k/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwzb4y_cWaXdPRzWrvPE-5aJyWqyGGWEn7ty59N6nfEadaThEWsNHSBy05SWkgXmq2R-XRKs7ZzhDq13xuOElcUUNBGAsA2BWGrqS4bI4ONmiG5aFvpcP2fuH1wQl9NdM46tJ7R9KWY5k/s1600/photo+1.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The first was a Jelly Roll Race Quilt. I got a jelly roll of a really cute line from Riley Blake called "Saddle Up" and I used the girly colorways from it and then mixed in some Kona solids to break it up and add to it. I didn't do any sashing because I didn't know how yet, but I think it turned out ok anyway.<br />

I used a Denyse Schmidt that I got at Jo-Ann's for the back and I just did some straight line quilting to add some bulk to it. This was the first time I used my walking foot, too. I used pre-fab quilt binding and hated it so now I only make my own binding.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrZibRvS3CkrqfM7XnF0qTA-I3a8ymGMLaPX0OiJb4BZHnViuBy-f6UbPBjHR5kzX_xqP_M-nnfxrQiNXrT_qKzvjcuXggoIYrqpgaMOACgxR8Od-ZwBd-fZc2KnwKcxn8R1HZjc3QlRo/s1600/photo+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrZibRvS3CkrqfM7XnF0qTA-I3a8ymGMLaPX0OiJb4BZHnViuBy-f6UbPBjHR5kzX_xqP_M-nnfxrQiNXrT_qKzvjcuXggoIYrqpgaMOACgxR8Od-ZwBd-fZc2KnwKcxn8R1HZjc3QlRo/s1600/photo+3.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
I also added a little label that I made from grosgrain ribbon and fabric ink and stamps.<br />
<br />
The second quilt I made was from a pattern called On The Boardwalk by It's Sew Emma. My cousin used it for her niece's quilt and I loved it so much I asked for some help to make one for my longest friend's first baby.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY8gaZRvz7suPTye-U5At2qJ3q3adzVHXLeASRsPG8rpJMNpUm1TmUvoBXz1YyI7tjF4BZTPvgXMuPk41AIO-eTOIggmzObzFR9RCTJWiEKgZAhoQMl8u5xsDnciQwN_LlBvUqTPJ9lUM/s1600/photo+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY8gaZRvz7suPTye-U5At2qJ3q3adzVHXLeASRsPG8rpJMNpUm1TmUvoBXz1YyI7tjF4BZTPvgXMuPk41AIO-eTOIggmzObzFR9RCTJWiEKgZAhoQMl8u5xsDnciQwN_LlBvUqTPJ9lUM/s1600/photo+4.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
The fabric I used was a FQ stack of the Mo Willems' Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus (from the Fat Quarter Shop - love them!). My friend and I are big readers and baby E is going to be too. This is one of my favorite children's stories so I jumped at the chance to use the fabric. (My mom gave the book at the shower so she got a bag with the quilt, its pillows, and books.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOO8b-5c9bhmexeYJnwC9Xlbn53my_JPKN99EyA8UnxY5GY6-E1o-WaqHRsXNI5-nt1G8XxYDmZYhEFbS6XnUkOZb5tRg0ww45D8UA_alQrof6LlunxRPBFKWpOg9IM6DRG649QyDFpwI/s1600/photo+5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOO8b-5c9bhmexeYJnwC9Xlbn53my_JPKN99EyA8UnxY5GY6-E1o-WaqHRsXNI5-nt1G8XxYDmZYhEFbS6XnUkOZb5tRg0ww45D8UA_alQrof6LlunxRPBFKWpOg9IM6DRG649QyDFpwI/s1600/photo+5.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
I used the multi panel from the stack for the backing - it was a tight squeeze, but I was determined to make it work. I did straight line quilting long the boxes on the front and bound it with a dot print (by whom, I now forget).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRKw3qh_2a959P1_kRNKiyNEjRvMBn-BKz96EGc6gq0bDFjYbA3-n-IvY_-F7hD0ZQvd2NZS5QUPn4vXR4xZihQXtTjosDGKx8NSbMF95ZzTpqugp84Ur4EIvK6SbFVbbqPfzK8lQpqkg/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRKw3qh_2a959P1_kRNKiyNEjRvMBn-BKz96EGc6gq0bDFjYbA3-n-IvY_-F7hD0ZQvd2NZS5QUPn4vXR4xZihQXtTjosDGKx8NSbMF95ZzTpqugp84Ur4EIvK6SbFVbbqPfzK8lQpqkg/s1600/photo+2.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
Along with the fabric was a panel that had two pillows and a hand puppet. I made them all pillows, though. I used some of the leftover fabric from that panel for one of the pieces on the front. (Thanks to my girl Yvette for helping me with all the cutting - I never would have finished it!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihSZdz4mPE_6UeDOaDwuZic8PimaB52ZT4fPM_drKcu8o9oAmf4W62bLTBMZP7yKkh16zDmn-QAoOjV4uQptOnUc02xNPQ1vX-PZ-Bt7FhNeLI3DQtzpxKX2YKoCVIFOqSJwrV5iMHWHE/s1600/photo+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihSZdz4mPE_6UeDOaDwuZic8PimaB52ZT4fPM_drKcu8o9oAmf4W62bLTBMZP7yKkh16zDmn-QAoOjV4uQptOnUc02xNPQ1vX-PZ-Bt7FhNeLI3DQtzpxKX2YKoCVIFOqSJwrV5iMHWHE/s1600/photo+4.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>

So, there you have it. Two baby quilts done. I'll do another post about my Lorax Quilt and the one that I've got in the works now. I also did a tshirt quilt (which, coincidentally, is the largest quilt I've ever made) so I'll post about that one too.<br />

I have a wonderful group of friends and one of those lovely ladies is Helen. She's a real treat to be around. She's fun, spunky, and just a joy to be friends with. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.akronglassworks.com/" target="_blank">Akron Glassworks</a> does <a href="http://www.akronglassworks.com/Workshops.php" target="_blank">classes</a> a few times a year and she had taken one before and asked if I wanted to join in on the fun for the Christmas ornament class. Oh yes! I had blown glass before during a school trip or something like that (terrible memory) and I love the look of blown glass, so I was eager to be a part of this.</div>

<br />Meig Heyburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03975627547667096643noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1143709531094284261.post-48869536872656724372013-01-31T09:59:00.001-05:002013-01-31T10:35:21.953-05:00Pink Stitches Love Day Swap<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had a blast with this swap. I usually enjoy the swaps I do, but this one was extra fun. My partner, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/craftyozgirl/" target="_blank">Yvette</a>, is a really fun lady and has a lot of the same interests as me. I hope we keep in touch for a very long time! In our emailing, she told me how she loves bicycles, and red and teal, and she's not a big fan of purple (if you know me in real life, you know that purple is the one color I <i>really </i>don't like)...it's like we were destined to be friends.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s9_wSYFqaH4/UQYCLQMkffI/AAAAAAAADak/4e4uCD5rqJg/s1600/DSC_0002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s9_wSYFqaH4/UQYCLQMkffI/AAAAAAAADak/4e4uCD5rqJg/s640/DSC_0002.JPG" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
While shopping around with Brandi to find some ideas for the swap, we found this really cute bicycle embroidery kit. I snagged it (and later sent my mom back to get another one so I could make it for my aunt who rides her bicycle for many, many miles a year) and decided to make this the first hand embroidery-sewing project that I start and finish in a timely fashion. Boy, am I glad I did! She said that she had been eyeing this <u>very</u> kit and wondered if she would actually do it - I'm so glad I got it for her! It's like destiny. ;)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fZMV44K7Ttg/UQYCLi2bWqI/AAAAAAAADas/oZhqJE77RxU/s1600/DSC_0001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fZMV44K7Ttg/UQYCLi2bWqI/AAAAAAAADas/oZhqJE77RxU/s640/DSC_0001.JPG" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I also was told that she likes coffee (I also am rather obsessed with coffee - I drink a lot of it, and I get mine at <a href="http://www.kirkjeffery.com/">www.kirkjeffery.com</a> - check out his selection, very good coffee, roasted in small batches, and comparable price to the pounds you get in store, but much better quality. Ok, moving on...), so I made her a coffee sleeve using Red Heart Blue Hawaii and Red Heart Cherry Red (I use acrylic yarn on these so they are easily washable and go back to shape quickly). Funny thing is, after I had made this and put it with her other gifts, she sent me a text message saying she wanted a coffee sleeve because she loves<a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/112049151/custom-crochet-heart-coffee-cozy?" target="_blank"> these ones that we have in the shop</a>. ;)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6kTGZdmPPqts_n5nTO2qU-671_JWiTn89vYpg0_SxjoltyVqBENBkW0rgMCxWjRUGpALqqt9rrtOuT63Qv92J_aCIEHkXfGjyPV7WK5TMaoi_T5HXTEeOmEII19r5_wAI8Mwb2yusfFY/s1600/DSC_0008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6kTGZdmPPqts_n5nTO2qU-671_JWiTn89vYpg0_SxjoltyVqBENBkW0rgMCxWjRUGpALqqt9rrtOuT63Qv92J_aCIEHkXfGjyPV7WK5TMaoi_T5HXTEeOmEII19r5_wAI8Mwb2yusfFY/s640/DSC_0008.JPG" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I made her a fabric basket using a bicycle burlap I found at JoAnn's and this lovely 'love' print I also found at JoAnn's.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-w5-b8XDxLCI/UQYCRlC7d0I/AAAAAAAADa8/Suk7mEsdiuY/s1600/DSC_0009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-w5-b8XDxLCI/UQYCRlC7d0I/AAAAAAAADa8/Suk7mEsdiuY/s640/DSC_0009.JPG" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
She has two daughters, so I used some of the leftover love fabric and made them little chapstick pouches and put some yummy looking chapstick in there for them. She said she's holding onto them to put in their lunches on Valentine's Day. Ahh! How sweet. :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig9mfnLVwUitQDMpKxkNIGKsTqrfBvBrr96SV4gL2seuFFUUxmXgOy90hus4AGZzMfGlZR5X7G16IuzGAVSiUOGhP0du9AQAytQhCpWNcrw53VnV0xYWTzRkIhHwMEESdlzwONMk4nqjM/s1600/DSC_0011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig9mfnLVwUitQDMpKxkNIGKsTqrfBvBrr96SV4gL2seuFFUUxmXgOy90hus4AGZzMfGlZR5X7G16IuzGAVSiUOGhP0du9AQAytQhCpWNcrw53VnV0xYWTzRkIhHwMEESdlzwONMk4nqjM/s640/DSC_0011.JPG" height="640" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
She also has pets, like me, so I sent along some treats for her kitties and a toy for her dog. That dog toy is almost too cute to be a dog toy, though! Throw in a few candies, cute tissues, and some heart socks, and there you go!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKtZRQDMWHZmANeR6E0BybX7O47No2CIrVHATrUSdrM2WJ5KQL1ioXegMBXkUQrWerxdAURDh0NMpaE3YJnIbamue8DkKWQwAnoOfnxya1CQC2YTNj7mhophHqzY-qCEl89gKDmerhmlI/s1600/DSC_0012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKtZRQDMWHZmANeR6E0BybX7O47No2CIrVHATrUSdrM2WJ5KQL1ioXegMBXkUQrWerxdAURDh0NMpaE3YJnIbamue8DkKWQwAnoOfnxya1CQC2YTNj7mhophHqzY-qCEl89gKDmerhmlI/s640/DSC_0012.JPG" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I really enjoy doing the swaps over at <a href="http://pinkxstitches.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Pink Stitches</a>. She really does a fine job organizing it and setting it all up. I can't wait to see what's next!!<br />
<br />
It's also through one of the Pink Stitches swaps that Brandi got paired with <a href="http://www.sewdelicious.com.au/" target="_blank">Ros from Sew Delicious</a>. We <b>love</b> Ros and have participated in her first swap, a <a href="http://www.sewdelicious.com.au/2013/01/sweet-pouch-swap-some-more-info.html" target="_blank">sweet pouch swap</a>! I sure hope that my friendship with Yvette turns into the same kind of friendship that Ros, Brandi, and I have!<br />
<br />
You can check out the progress of the Sweet Pouch Swap on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/2157276@N21/" target="_blank">Flickr</a>! We're almost ready to send them, just need a few more sweets to put in!Meig Heyburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03975627547667096643noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1143709531094284261.post-8184219009029972902013-01-28T09:32:00.002-05:002013-01-28T09:46:10.153-05:00Petty Cash Stash<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In an effort to put up some more things that I'm working on, or done with, here is another quick project that I did. My coworker and I were using a plain envelope for our petty cash and it was terrible at holding the change, so I told her I'd make a little zip pouch and embroider 'petty cash' on the outside. She didn't think I'd actually do it, but I did. So here's a little bag for our petty cash stash.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_EeMG9faJrnNo71B_3AnligzVTxNq1nHw3i0k1mhHV8eqUR0P_wdaCVJioulEZkaMhntwszdzivAb_xSYWcERDfHcsdcU9MlxiEG7BVb0PqBYVZD9b42XXNyyF-jQ6mUbN0v-jJUoaAg/s1600/DSC_0013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_EeMG9faJrnNo71B_3AnligzVTxNq1nHw3i0k1mhHV8eqUR0P_wdaCVJioulEZkaMhntwszdzivAb_xSYWcERDfHcsdcU9MlxiEG7BVb0PqBYVZD9b42XXNyyF-jQ6mUbN0v-jJUoaAg/s640/DSC_0013.JPG" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
I used fabrics that were in my fabric stash, a zipper that was given to me by a friend, and I used two different fonts for the embroidery. I used a stem stitch for 'petty' and a whip stitch for 'cash.' This was the first time I did a whip stitch that much and I think it turned out well!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmhz1v3ZZupeGsS2z3RdnRB5WDAaq4Z7CTkjwh_8CIQmpKpnLhzsa4XZuhyR_j02Lzx4zAZJWFFflMDS5y-OPJKDpxxsv7lMEXsdWNtF7DX0iAIGk8Qocht0tEZBB-ZWOXSM6Kabjd21A/s1600/DSC_0015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmhz1v3ZZupeGsS2z3RdnRB5WDAaq4Z7CTkjwh_8CIQmpKpnLhzsa4XZuhyR_j02Lzx4zAZJWFFflMDS5y-OPJKDpxxsv7lMEXsdWNtF7DX0iAIGk8Qocht0tEZBB-ZWOXSM6Kabjd21A/s640/DSC_0015.JPG" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
The bag is just a simple zip pouch, but I really need to look at <a href="http://www.sewdelicious.com.au/2012/04/trouble-with-zips.html" target="_blank">those tutorials for better zipper corners</a> - mine are terrible! Oh well, it serves its purpose. :)<br />

It's been forever since I posted here. Shame on me. I haven't posted at <a href="http://craftygsquared.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Crafty Girl Squared</a>, either. We've been so busy with <i>life</i> that things have just fallen away. That doesn't mean that I haven't been working on things. I have been a busy, busy bee! Eventually I will find some time to update on all my projects, but today I want to share one of my favorites.<br />
<br />
You may remember<a href="http://craftygsquared.blogspot.com/2012/08/london-calling.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> this pouch</a> I made to put my notary supplies in, I loved it but not enough.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGnSBcNUPJHgRRPq8VmDomcemSVry79sPekxkrxTT79NDmkt10-shsix6qgolfANh3WDW9GdW4sIUc2bzZUgvbEepMidMaUL1bfehw_CRxWRey5Frrsn_6y7scAOKYn_gx8DEhq19sqKk/s640/DSC_0001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGnSBcNUPJHgRRPq8VmDomcemSVry79sPekxkrxTT79NDmkt10-shsix6qgolfANh3WDW9GdW4sIUc2bzZUgvbEepMidMaUL1bfehw_CRxWRey5Frrsn_6y7scAOKYn_gx8DEhq19sqKk/s640/DSC_0001.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It was my first attempt using a zipper and I found this <a href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/fabric/designer/julia_rothman/type" target="_blank">AWESOMEST FABRIC IN THE WORLD</a> that I wanted to use for that very same purpose. I also found a fat quarter stack at my <a href="http://crimsontate.com/" target="_blank">very favorite (not-quite-so-local) quilt shop</a>. Thankfully, it was in their <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/CrimsonTate" target="_blank">Etsy</a> store so I could snag it for myself! And since I would be visiting soon, my lovely cousin picked it up for me (she really is the best) and saved me some shipping and got an excuse to wander into the loveliness that is <a href="http://crimsontate.com/" target="_blank">Crimson Tate :: Modern Quilter</a>.<br />

(Dear Julia Rothman: you captured the essence of my daily grind and made it pretty. THANK YOU.)<br />
<br />
Anywho, since I made up those awesome stockings for Christmas (that I'll blog about later - promise!) I have been <i>obsessed</i> with the quilt as you go (qayg) technique. Thanks <a href="http://imaginegnats.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-falling-flakes-stocking-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Rachael</a>!<br />

<br />
I pulled some choice cuts and used fusible fleece for interfacing, which with a bag this size made turning a bit cumbersome, but I love the way it holds shape so well. I used a tutorial from <a href="http://prettymodern.typepad.com/its_a_pretty_modern_life/2009/08/zippered-box-pouch-pattern-and-tutorial-fully-lined-with-photos.html" target="_blank">Pretty Modern</a>.<br />

<br />
This bag is PERFECTION. My seal and stamp fit in it just perfectly, and being a legal assistant, every day I use paper clips, a typewriter (well, maybe not every day, but we do actually still use a typewriter and a fax machine - <b>old school, baby</b>), pens, and now...glasses. Yep, I've had to get glasses. Oh well.<br />

Brandi and I are doing the Shorts on the Line sew along over at <a href="http://imaginegnats.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">imagine gnats</a>. I set out sewing a pair of knit shorts for the twins that I babysit but when I got done drafting my pattern (using an existing pair of shorts), cutting, sewing, and admiring, I realized that they were big enough to fit JJ. Oops! I guess I needed to use a bigger seam allowance. I have this terrible habit of only using 1/4" seam allowances even though I really need 1/2" or 5/8". They turned out cute, though!<br />
<br />

<br />
They're made from a t-shirt that I wore to work in <a href="http://globalodyssey.blogspot.com/search/label/Mexico%202012" target="_blank">Mexico</a> when I went to build houses. I used part of the sleeve for the waistband and did a bit of a yoga pant style fold-over waistband for them. I also used the hem on the bottom of the shirt for the hem on the shorts to save some time!<br />
<br />
Of course we got some shots of our little model. I may be a little biased, but I think she's the cutest 2 year old ever!<br />

Not easy since I have a lot of yard work and unpacking left to do, but I'm working on a balance there.<br />
<br />
I am a part time nanny for 4 month old twins and a 3 year old. They are sheer delight. I love spending time with them even though it's insanely exhausting because someone is always demanding attention. Twins are not easy! But I still love spending my days with them. :) Their parents are super sweet too. The mother is the organist at my church and I've known her for a number of years. The father, I've known since I was in high school and he helped out with the youth group at one of my former churches (one of about 13, if my count is correct; being the musician's and pastor's kid definitely gets you a list of churches you've attended). Anyway, onto what I made them:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyBvG4iNRCkrRm_sWZuHgqvOZzRL7Bzt5wzSzJM2BAjh-FF4PL8ZuQyOaU1hFr_Z1Tv81d-WD9VHbB9kQRDNVHrJ_XCFLeht7PsE3Zdjvu0HUWxgln1WRBmv4GfCjnYpwoDapMPSPZEBw/s1600/DSC_0001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyBvG4iNRCkrRm_sWZuHgqvOZzRL7Bzt5wzSzJM2BAjh-FF4PL8ZuQyOaU1hFr_Z1Tv81d-WD9VHbB9kQRDNVHrJ_XCFLeht7PsE3Zdjvu0HUWxgln1WRBmv4GfCjnYpwoDapMPSPZEBw/s640/DSC_0001.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
Two circle skirts and a tie from bandannas! I picked these bandannas up at Pat Catan's for $1 each and I knew I had to make something for these kids. The girls are fraternal twins so they don't look alike, but it's still fun to dress them alike. I wanted to give their older brother something cute to match with their outfits so this is what I did!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XnlViU9X72E/T8LVfg2UwYI/AAAAAAAADTo/rl3TUqarbH0/s1600/DSC_0002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XnlViU9X72E/T8LVfg2UwYI/AAAAAAAADTo/rl3TUqarbH0/s640/DSC_0002.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
I sort of used a tutorial/pattern from <a href="http://www.danamadeit.com/2012/04/celebrate-baby-tutorial-and-pattern-little-baby-circle-skirt.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Dana from MADE</a>. I love all her tutes and patterns. The pattern she has is a little too small for these girls since they're 4mo and hers was for 0-3mo. But I added some length and took a little extra off the middle and it worked great for me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ESpAJN9aZJY/T8LVoEkWOmI/AAAAAAAADTw/q-GLeFm1WLY/s1600/DSC_0003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ESpAJN9aZJY/T8LVoEkWOmI/AAAAAAAADTw/q-GLeFm1WLY/s640/DSC_0003.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>
The tie was created using <a href="http://imsharingthewealth.blogspot.com/2011/09/little-boy-tie-tutorial.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this tutorial on Sharing the Wealth</a>. It's a really good tute and I loved how the tie turned out. I only wish I had gotten the points to line up a bit better. Oh well, there's always next time! :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-felnKk-Yv1s/T8LVwTSdZ7I/AAAAAAAADT4/t_ccHoxxoIU/s1600/DSC_0004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-felnKk-Yv1s/T8LVwTSdZ7I/AAAAAAAADT4/t_ccHoxxoIU/s640/DSC_0004.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
I really love how they turned out. I just did a little zig zag stitch on the edge to finish them off, but in hindsight, I could have left it without cutting because they would have been the right length and then it would have been a funky hem-line.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_zMrNdsBI7w/T8LV3G8uX2I/AAAAAAAADUA/treWuWhjCV0/s1600/DSC_0006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_zMrNdsBI7w/T8LV3G8uX2I/AAAAAAAADUA/treWuWhjCV0/s640/DSC_0006.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I also whipped up a romper for my little cousin's first birthday! I used a pattern/tutorial that was Brandi's but had to make a few adjustments and did a few things differently, too. I really only used the pattern/tute as a guide on this because the measurements for it were too small for the waist measurement of my cousin. Nevertheless, I think it turned out SUPER cute and I can't wait to see her in it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmHpGfOe-VAr4nnobNQMOzHgvDWCyg8qUTfDSJkCFpiav4N6S9ixNHxr3yfv6GtsDb1DiYDY9jHCvjUzJYv6ATbMzX9x2UNeym__QjMD3tFQfiEbAe57k9BU2NEFZ_6rOCfvNnTCHwqFE/s1600/DSC_0027.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmHpGfOe-VAr4nnobNQMOzHgvDWCyg8qUTfDSJkCFpiav4N6S9ixNHxr3yfv6GtsDb1DiYDY9jHCvjUzJYv6ATbMzX9x2UNeym__QjMD3tFQfiEbAe57k9BU2NEFZ_6rOCfvNnTCHwqFE/s640/DSC_0027.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
I used a vintage sheet for the fabric. I cut it on the bias so it has a bit of stretch to it. It's also likely a little big for her, but that means she can wear it a bit longer.<br />
<br />

The bias tape was from my Grandma Stevic's stash. She had the same birthday as my cousin Rob who is uncle to the sweet girl who will get this gift.<br />

Such a cute project! I can't wait to give it to her tomorrow. :)<br />
<br />
I also finished up a very special order and got it listed in the shop. My dear friend Theresa in New Zealand (!!! need to visit her !!!) wanted a cloche hat and headwrap after she saw one of my previous blog posts (during our winter here, which is just starting there - WEIRD!). I was in the process of moving so I was slow going on the project and just finally finished it.<br />

She wanted chocolate brown and cream. I got these yarns from Hobby Lobby and they're both all cotton. I love the feel of them!<br />

This is a Micah Makes pattern. I tested it and have loved it so much that I keep making it for other people (my mom, the dog groomer, etc.). It's called the <a href="http://www.micahmakes.com/pattern-store/hugs-kisses-headwrap" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Hugs & Kisses Headwrap</a>. If you don't know about Micah Makes and her patterns, you better get over to her site and check her out. I LOVE her patterns. I have a few of them and covet all the rest. She's super sweet and a really great pattern-maker.<br />

The pattern for this flower can be found <a href="http://lovestitches.blogspot.com/2011/08/patterns-crocheted-flower-brooches.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here</a> and the pattern for the cloche is <a href="http://daperfectmix.blogspot.com/2010/11/classic-cloche-pattern.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here</a>. Although, I don't really use the cloche pattern except to remind me how to do the brim.<br />
<br />
So, that's what I've been creating this week/weekend. I hope that you in the States remember those who served this weekend and not just to turn the bratwurst and those elsewhere, I hope you enjoy your weekend and have a great week. :)<br />
<br />
Happy crafting,<br />

<br />
Hello everyone! I'm Meig. I blog at <a href="http://globalodyssey.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Global Odyssey</a> about my life full of crafts, pets, love, faith, and travels. I also am half of <a href="http://craftygsquared.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Crafty Girl Squared</a> where we share crafts, sewing, crochet, and a strong friendship. Please go check out our <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/CraftyGirlSquared" target="_blank">shop</a> where everything is 45% off!! :)<br />
<br />
Jennifer has asked me to talk about how I keep things simple. Well, anyone who knows me knows that there is very little that is simple about my life. What is a seemingly short story about a trip to the grocery store often turns into a comedy routine about trying to find the vinegar and getting run over by an old lady. Nevertheless, I <i>strive </i>for simplicity. I try to cook simple meals and I try to live my day in a simple routine. Often, I'm terribly swayed from my attempt, but sometimes I succeed.<br />
<br />
Today though, I want to share with you about what brings me peace, joy, and centers me. <a href="http://globalodyssey.blogspot.com/2011/11/raj-wonder-dog.html" target="_blank">Two years ago I took in a stray dog 'for the weekend.'</a> That weekend has lasted two years and I couldn't be happier about that. He has taught me so much that I would have missed in my buzz-filled life were he not around.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNTgS277FPdO5Rstj9ppgAYNTJt_iW9469H8TDBQuRdKyLxG7WcpZ9kxp9vZuTwV61n1WV8qTiXMzf5FJ03oIFYiD3hwgHdvA61RerKK9IB3RsYZGIu70e8ETM62HLEEvqTjUwKzgWbvA/s1600/DSC_0107+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNTgS277FPdO5Rstj9ppgAYNTJt_iW9469H8TDBQuRdKyLxG7WcpZ9kxp9vZuTwV61n1WV8qTiXMzf5FJ03oIFYiD3hwgHdvA61RerKK9IB3RsYZGIu70e8ETM62HLEEvqTjUwKzgWbvA/s640/DSC_0107+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Before Raj, my life was constant go, go, go. I never took a breath until I got overwhelmed by all the things I said 'yes' to and stepped away from it all and hid out in my house. That's not healthy for anyone. No way. But then along came Raj. Unlike my cats, he needed to be walked every day. He needed to be let out every 8 hours. He needed someone to sit at home while he ate because he was afraid to eat if he was alone. He <b>needed </b>me. What I didn't realize is how much I needed him.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vbp4BE1aOn8/T5ybANmplUI/AAAAAAAADI4/t48s6LdlPKU/s1600/DSC_0256.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vbp4BE1aOn8/T5ybANmplUI/AAAAAAAADI4/t48s6LdlPKU/s640/DSC_0256.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
On walks with him, I have rediscovered my love of nature. I have stopped to smell the flowers. I have taken time to enjoy the simple things in life. I have learned to take breaks and say 'no' a lot more often. I let him remind me that life is beautiful and all I have to do is open my heart to see that.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div>
I have begun reading a lot more about dogs and how they think. They're a lot more simple than we humans are. They don't really have an emotional attachment to things, that's not to say they're not emotional, but they see things logically (i.e. if I pee on the floor I get scolded, ergo I will not pee on the floor). This has caused me to think about things in my own life and how I can simplify them and eliminate the negative energy and focus more on the positive energy.</div>
<div>

I am blessed, truly blessed, in so many ways. I have a loving family and a great network of friends that I could not be here today without. I am taking a cue from my sweet, loving, and kind pup and trying my hand at living simply. Enjoying the moment. Taking it all in. Embracing my blessings and finding joy in the every day.</div>

I have checked a number of projects off my list. Yay!<br />
<br />
My friend Renee had her baby (he's perfect!) and wanted to know if I would make some nursing covers for her. Since they're just big squares of fabric with straps, I figured that wouldn't be too hard. :) She picked out the fabric and even found one that coordinates with the fabric I used for her <a href="http://craftygsquared.blogspot.com/2012/02/made-it-monday-baby-shower-reveal.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">baby shower gifts</a>. I used this <a href="http://www.sew-much-ado.com/2009/02/description-stylish-and-practical.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">tutorial</a> as a guide and for measurements. I did a few things differently based upon my preferences, but overall it's a great tutorial.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_8egMMwZ-oryrA6zbmtsu2vPrBKwer-BpIoVPy0F1hkvdIldC5iAO6oDv4DPkC7NLeVVoharD3JZ2u8J2y6Wdx_Si8A3FrZbNttAGdLryZbyJJwEPP8WJMwWu_iI7RyLH47Z7rs5HYhg/s1600/boob+covers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_8egMMwZ-oryrA6zbmtsu2vPrBKwer-BpIoVPy0F1hkvdIldC5iAO6oDv4DPkC7NLeVVoharD3JZ2u8J2y6Wdx_Si8A3FrZbNttAGdLryZbyJJwEPP8WJMwWu_iI7RyLH47Z7rs5HYhg/s640/boob+covers.jpg" width="568" /></a></div>
<br />
I got the wrong sized d-rings, but it's ok because they still work and that's all that matters, right? (This is why you go shopping with your pattern in hand!)<br />

Overall, I love how they turned out! I put some triangles of washcloth in the bottom corners so she could use it for burps, spit-up, or other various cleaning needs.<br />

<br />
I'm hoping I can sneak away for a few hours this week to deliver them and get me some baby time!!<br />
<br />
I hope you're all having a great weekend. That's all for my sewing today, but I'll be back soon with some more baby gifts!Meig Heyburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03975627547667096643noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1143709531094284261.post-39113278916634334052012-04-14T17:53:00.002-04:002012-04-14T17:53:50.310-04:00Leash BagEver since Raj came into my family, I've wanted to have a bag to put on his leash to carry my phone, keys, some money and my ID. I usually wear sweats when we go walking and sometimes I wear my yoga pants which (unfortunately) have no pockets. I don't like weighing my sweats down with my phone, but it's not really a good idea to go for a long walk without it. Alas, I FINALLY made one. :)<br />

I used <a href="http://sewmuch2luv.blogspot.com/2011/06/dont-fear-zipperbag-tutorial.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this tutorial</a> at <a href="http://sewmuch2luv.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sew Much 2 Luv</a> because I'm not very versed with zippers yet so I wanted something to follow along, but I learned a lot along the way. I am hoping to use up some of my zipper collection and make a few for the shop! :)<br />
<br />
I got the bicycle fabric from the remnants collection at Jo-Ann. It is flannel, so pretty heavy duty. I didn't use fusible fleece like she did, I used medium weight fusible interfacing because I didn't want it to be too thick (especially since I was using the flannel).<br />

The zipper is from a box of things I acquired from my grandmother. I am rather sentimental so I've been having a difficult time using those supplies because I want to keep them forever. Knowing that I can't, I'm slowly beginning to work through them. I used part of the extra length of the zipper for a little handle so I can connect it to his leash with a carabeener or the clip on his doggie poo bags. [These are the best bags ever, I must say - they're the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=bl_sr_pet-supplies?_encoding=UTF8&node=2619533011&field-brandtextbin=Greenbone" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Greenbone </a>bags that you can get at <a href="http://www.target.com/p/DOG-BAGS-BIO-DISP-AND-REFILL/-/A-13987212#?lnk=sc_qi_detailbutton" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Target</a> (or Amazon as I posted a link to there, too) and the bags are biodegradable (faster than other bags), they're thicker and sturdier, and the dispenser is a lot more heavy duty than the other dispensers that we've had (and subsequently broken).]<br />

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with my new leash bag and about to go check one more thing off my list of things to do today! :)<br />

<br />
I got my things from my <a href="http://imaginegnats.blogspot.com/p/covert-robin.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Covert Robin</a> a week or so ago but haven't had the time to sit down and tell you about them! :)<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.crinkledreams.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Teresa</a> sent me these two lovely things: a cosmetics bag and a lunch tote. She used this <a href="http://www.crinkledreams.com/2012/01/like-i-need-another-project/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">sweet laminate</a> that has places around the world on it and I couldn't be happier!! She also wrapped it up in this lovely grey polka dot fabric! I love polka dots!!<br />

I've used the lunch bag every day since I got it and it's perfect! I got so many compliments on it at work, too.<br />
<br />
I'm super grateful for all her hard work! Since I'm talking about the Covert Robin project, here's a sneak peek at what I made to send to my person. I hope she likes it. I found this swap more difficult than others when trying to figure out what to send.<br />

<br />
<center><a href="http://seekatesew.blogspot.com/"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrOrQWTyIwg-eRw33Z4rKhYJm05Faz3qSrrQvZMl4VXUk2PzoLqnnmYH-VxwEZm6Tvc62D9op5aXJwwPO_7_rlUvklgNPbx803LnplXvcpwyYOmpOz6pmed5udELJCsdBTv5JK-08UyQ0/s1600/sewalongbutton.jpg" /></a></center><center><br /></center>
<br />
I participated in another sew along with <a href="http://seekatesew.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">See Kate Sew</a> and this time it was a<a href="http://seekatesew.blogspot.com/2012/04/sunshine-ruffle-clutch-tutorial-sew.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> ruffle clutch</a>! Last time we did the <a href="http://globalodyssey.blogspot.com/2011/11/see-kate-sew-sweet-scallops-tote.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sweet Scallops Tote</a>. So cute and simple!<br />
<br />
I wanted to do something a little different with her idea and I've had this football team pillow sham lying around forever so I figured what better time to use it?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-koR831XlLTY/T4jXA_OQTPI/AAAAAAAAC8M/OOUoLqNAJA4/s1600/DSC_0240.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-koR831XlLTY/T4jXA_OQTPI/AAAAAAAAC8M/OOUoLqNAJA4/s640/DSC_0240.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I snagged a fat quarter of football fabric and some white polka dot fabric and set to work on this guy. I really love how it turned out!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL-f99Q6RLApcQh8rnFmYE2j4DIt-5QhjwcQzj26mRQi_0xpAdEeE8_D7YGCENmMlizuc_b-qds4T71Rw0yJ-NIujPcNc9Hp89eyRDSCH4lrkjs5i1OoqP50tAFXYOv7aSw50lY3I6oQ8/s1600/DSC_0243.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL-f99Q6RLApcQh8rnFmYE2j4DIt-5QhjwcQzj26mRQi_0xpAdEeE8_D7YGCENmMlizuc_b-qds4T71Rw0yJ-NIujPcNc9Hp89eyRDSCH4lrkjs5i1OoqP50tAFXYOv7aSw50lY3I6oQ8/s640/DSC_0243.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-w5uKE7hInXI/T4jXJoYAlNI/AAAAAAAAC8U/2l3Kv4_jYM0/s1600/DSC_0241.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-w5uKE7hInXI/T4jXJoYAlNI/AAAAAAAAC8U/2l3Kv4_jYM0/s640/DSC_0241.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I added a strip of pleated fabric down the middle so it looked like the finger grips on a football. :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDp3NtCwIWdqvPS18q4vhk_1ReICTQPgGFnAu4vfdNL7IWQK1OSbHKL9FeKHPRDPrZlgqtTFruuWXa_bJsBXeelLRymxdhD9qNOzzKMzlpb_yDDbdFk7VtfHHdQIIUkBGCTXPYvAXBbV0/s1600/DSC_0247.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDp3NtCwIWdqvPS18q4vhk_1ReICTQPgGFnAu4vfdNL7IWQK1OSbHKL9FeKHPRDPrZlgqtTFruuWXa_bJsBXeelLRymxdhD9qNOzzKMzlpb_yDDbdFk7VtfHHdQIIUkBGCTXPYvAXBbV0/s640/DSC_0247.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
So now I can carry this to watch the games at the local pub and feel a little girly in my jersey while cheering on my Cleveland Browns. :)<br />
<br />

<br />
Thanks for another awesome sew along, Kate! :)<br />
<br />
Make sure you check out <a href="http://jubeescraftbox.blogspot.com/2012/04/sew-along.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Brandi's watermelon clutch</a>!! She's so clever!<br />
<br />
<i>PS: If you know me in real life, you know I injured myself today with the sewing machine. This project is not the abuser, I was prepping some fabric for pre-washing and went too fast and got my finger under the needle. So I'm all bandaged up and kept right on trucking with this guy. :)</i><br />

I don't know what put that image in my mind, but it just wouldn't go away until I wrote it down. Today, I'm going to share it with you.</i></span><br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">She stood on the front porch and watched it rain. The water just kept coming. She remembered her mother used to say it was raining cats and dogs. She never understood why she said that, but the memory washed over her anyway. She was thankful for the rain; the earth needed it as much as she did.</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">
She watched as the puddles melded together and formed a river down the street. The river snaked around rocks and trees cutting its path to the flat land at the end of her road. She was instantly reminded of how much she hated snakes and wondered if Zulu was thriving in the forest.</span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">
Her soul needed a rest. She felt exhausted from trying to keep up with everyone's expectations. They wanted her to be happy and lively; two things she hadn't felt in a very long time. It was as though they planned her life one emotion at a time. She was to feel overjoyed by their generosity and in awe of their ability to feed her needs. They didn't know her at all. </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">
She hated their pretentiousness and the idea that they could create the perfect life for her. He meant nothing to her and she didn't love him at all. He did everything wrong and tried his hardest to assimilate to her life. He bought a car like hers and he discovered a love of ballet and theater he never had before. He wasn't real. He was their version of a Stepford Wife, and he was to be her husband in a week.</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">
Could she escape now? Where would she go? She had no family or friends; they chose her well. This was completely insane. How could she have been such a fool? Despite her troubles, the rain just kept falling. She thought that maybe if she watched it long enough, she'd get the answers she yearned for.</span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">
She breathed in deep and smelled the rain mixed with fresh cut grass and the flowers in the garden. If she closed her eyes, she could smell the dirt and the metallic scent of the wet pavement. Then she heard the engine of the F150 down the road; it was out of a dream. She hadn't heard that engine for years; she was surprised she could remember how it sounded.</span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">
In her memory she saw another rainy day when he told her he loved her and she ran from the cab like it was on fire. Her heartbeat was so fast, she thought it was going to explode out of her chest. He loved her? But he was her best friend! He knew her everything. He held her hand when she buried her parents and her hair when she got drunk three hours later. Now he loves her? All she could do was run from him. Now all she wanted to do was run to him. He came from a time in her life she barely remembered. Maybe this was her saving grace.</span></span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">
Smiling, she stepped off the porch and climbed into the cab.</span></span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">
She never looked back.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></blockquote>
